July 31st – After breakfast at the hotel, a guided tour at The Mount, designed by noted American author Edith Wharton.

Wharton designed and built The Mount in 1902, based on the principles outlined in her influential book, The Decoration of Houses (1897), co-authored with architect Ogden Codman, Jr. This classical revival house represents the only full expression we have of Wharton's architectural interests.

Lunch at the award-winning Gateways Inn Restaurant before transferring to the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge.

Norman Rockwell Museum houses the most significant public collection of Norman Rockwell’s work in the world. The Museum’s holdings include original artwork, and the artist’s studio and its related collection, including personal memorabilia, supplies, and reference materials.

One of the special exhibitions that will be on during our visit is "Rockwell and the Movies."
Though Norman Rockwell is often identified with home town life in New England, he was a frequent visitor to California, and was called upon by Hollywood to create imagery for posters advertising entertaining feature films of his day.

This installation exploring Rockwell’s art for the movies features original paintings, vintage posters, lobby cards, and original portraits of movie stars drawn form the Museum’s Art and Archival Collections and private collections of Rockwell’s art. The Magnificent Ambersons (1941), The Song of Bernadette (1943), Along Came Jones (1945), The Razor’s Edge (1946), Cinderfella (1960) and the 1966 remake of the classic, Stagecoach, are among the films the artist branded with his signature style of realism and narration.

Dinner on your own before departing for Tanglewood and an exciting evening performance directed by James Levine and featuring works by Berg, Strauss and Mahler and the beautiful and accomplished Korean-American soprano Hei-Kyung Hong.

Return to Orchards Hotel for overnight. BL

August 1st – Breakfast at the hotel, then depart for a guided tour of the special exhibition “Picasso Looks at Degas,” featuring more than 100 works from international museums and private collections at The Clark Art Institute.

Throughout his life Pablo Picasso was fascinated with the life and work of Edgar Degas, collecting the Impressionist’s pictures, continually re-interpreting his images, and at the end of his life, creating scenes that included depictions of Degas himself.

Lunch on the Tanglewood Festival grounds before an afternoon concert conducted by Charles Dutoit and including works by Sibelius and Mussorgsky and the Elgar cello concerto with Yo Yo Ma.

Following the concert, depart for Ottawa. BL
