FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10 “ART & DESIGN IS ALL AROUND US” The beauty of everyday objects and surroundings is at the core of our visits today, beginning with a morning guided tour at the new American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. After two years of construction and renovation, the Museum's unparalleled collections of American ceramics, sculpture, stained glass, architectural elements, silver, pewter, glass, and jewellery can finally be seen in all their glory. So too can its early American rooms—12 of the Met's historic interiors. Transfer to the Museum of Arts and Design, the premier U.S. institution dedicated to the collection and exhibition of contemporary objects created in media such as clay, glass, wood, metal, and fibre, used in the fields of craft, art and design, as well as architecture, fashion, interior design, technology, performing arts, and art and design-driven industries. Through its collections, exhibitions and educational programs, the Museum encourages awareness and appreciation of art, craft and design in daily life. Lunch at Robert, the restaurant on the 9th floor of the museum, with its magnificent views of Columbus Circle, Central Park and Broadway. A design marvel itself, Robert features contemporary American fare mixed with Mediterranean influences. After lunch, a guided tour of the permanent collection of more than 2,000 objects that documents the history of the field from the mid-20th century to the present. Evening Performance — La Fanciulla del West, (The Girl of the Golden West) Puccini’s wild west opera, set in a mining camp at the foot of the Cloudy Mountains in California from 1849 to 1850, stars renowned American diva Deborah Voigt and the great Italian tenor Marcello Giordani, and is conducted by Nicola Luisotti. The performances mark the 100th anniversary of the opera’s world premiere at the Met. |

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 11 Full Day at Leisure This is the best time of the year to catch the important art exhibits – the list of New York museums is endless. Morning motorcoach transportation to the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the Guggenheim and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Evening performance – Come Fly Away! This one-of-a-kind experience combines the seductive vocals of "Ol' Blue Eyes" with the sizzling sound of a live 19-piece big band and the visceral thrill of Twyla Tharp's choreography. Come Fly Away features a score of beloved Sinatra classics including "Summer Wind," "Fly Me to the Moon," "My Way," "Theme from New York, New York" and "I've Got the World on a String," as fifteen of the world's best dancers tell the story of four couples falling in and out of love at a swinging nightclub on a star-lit evening. Tharp’s creative relationship with the music of Sinatra began in 1976 with the premiere of Once More Frank, a duet by Tharp and Mikhail Baryshnikov, created for the American Ballet Theatre. Sinatra requested that Tharp’s Sinatra Suite, a duet featuring Baryshnikov and Elaine Kudo, be performed when he received his Kennedy Center Honors Award, citing it as one of the purest expressions of his body of work. SUNDAY, DECEMBER 12 Morning free to attend church services, stroll along the Avenues, or to do some last-minute shopping. Depart the hotel for Ottawa at 1:30 PM. A supper stop will be made enroute. Arrive in Ottawa at Westgate Shopping Centre at about 10:30 p.m. |
