Bernard Shaw once wrote: “When a thing is funny, search it for a hidden truth.”
Reflecting on this quote, Artistic Director Jackie Maxwell acknowledged; “From the wit of Wilde, the gentle comedy of Chekhov to the barbed banter of Bernard Shaw and the cutting satire of Churchill, the Shaw Festival’s 2010 Season is infused with many facets of humour.
These brilliant playwrights’ ability to subvert and challenge, while making us laugh, enables us to hold a mirror up to the human condition and reveal its true reflection.”

We’ll enjoy three plays peeking behind various screens, a visit to the Abbozzo Gallery in Oakville and a special sensory experience at the Strewn Winery.

Join us – it promises to be a great time

Tuesday, June 22 – Early morning departure from the National Gallery, arriving in Oakville just in time for lunch at the highly-recommended Seasons Restaurant.

After lunch, a guided tour at Abbozzo Gallery, which specializes in providing the finest in contemporary art.

Devoted exclusively to original works of art, the gallery represents both established and emerging painters, printmakers and sculptors, including David Blackwood, one of Canada’s most-respected visual storytellers.

Continue to Niagara-on-the-Lake, and check in at the ever-elegant Prince of Wales Hotel.

Dinner on your own before transferring from the hotel to Festival Theatre for the evening performance of “An Ideal Husband” by Oscar Wilde, directed by Jackie Maxwell.

“When her husband behaves badly, should a wife always stand by her man? The quest for power and ambition eventually catch up with a much admired politician one night at an elegant party when past misdeeds are revealed by a beautiful stranger.

The options are clear – public scandal or the loss of his trusting wife – but how to choose?”

Wednesday, June 23 – Breakfast at the hotel.
Depart for Festival Theatre and the intriguing new "Manners, Customs + Costumes." Shaw Festival actors will introduce us to the costumes, social history and etiquette of a particular period in history. Learn the rules for living in the world of a period play.

Lunch on your own before departing from the hotel for Festival Theatre and the matinée performance of Bernard Shaw’s “The Doctor’s Dilemma,” directed by Morris Panych.

“A doctor with a lifesaving cure must make a terrible decision. Who should he treat: a kindly colleague who serves the poor, or an extremely talented but unscrupulous young artist, who also happens to have a beautiful young wife?
When there’s only room for one more, who can he afford to save?”

Transfer back to hotel after performance. Remainder of afternoon and early evening at leisure with dinner on your own. Transfer from the hotel to Festival Theatre for the evening performance of “The Women” by Clare Boothe Luce, directed by Alisa Palmer.

“When a Manhattan socialite finds out her husband is cheating, her friends are no help at all. With manicured claws, these women must fight to maintain their status while scheming to leave, steal or win back their own husbands. Clever, cut-throat, and delicious, a satirical look into the lives of the ladies who lunch and the world that determines their behaviour.”

Transfer back to hotel after performance.

Thursday, June 24 – Breakfast at hotel and check out. Depart for the Wine Country Cooking School located within the Strewn estate winery, and “The Elements of Taste,” a sensory experience that will provide new understanding of the five “true” tastes – salt, sweet, sour, bitter and umami – and how they affect our perception of wine.

Lunch with wine at the winery before returning to Ottawa.
